In continuation of the theme of my last post, I am happy to report that I managed to squish in some music practice last night, before I toddled off to my lesson, and some more this morning. This morning, you guys. I actually dragged my arse out of bed for it, and everything. I am so impressed with myself. :P Apparently it made me more organised, too; I was early for work, despite the extra half-hour taken for the musics.

Looking forward to [livejournal.com profile] monucs rehearsal tonight! (Hence the reason why I chose this morning rather than this evening for aforementioned activity.)

Wearing one of my new tops today. I look like a very well-dressed, clean, land-lubbing pirate. That is to say, I suppose, that I look nothing like a pirate, but I am wearing a red and white striped top with a ginormous creamy bow.

Yay for succeeding to practice. I don't know if I told you this story. My main conference has some pretty amazing musicians that attend. I spoke to this one guy who is a brilliant jazz trumpeter, asking him how he managed to get to/stay at that level of skill while being a full time academic. He said he religiously practises an hour a day.
Another of the researchers in attendance last year, was away from home for only one week, but had brought his instrument and was practising in the courtyard. This made me sufficiently motivated to at least commit to 10 minutes a day on the recorder. Doing that for a few months improved my skill enormously. I even took my recorder with me to a conference in
December, practising scales and pieces in my room most days, and also to CIV.
I'm having a momentary lapse, but am spending more time composing, recording and typesetting music, so have excused myself for now.

That's a very encouraging anecdote - it can be very hard to find the time if you don't make the effort to, but I am certainly trying to re-establish good habits. :)
Violins are less transportable than recorders, at least as far as flights go, so mine tends to be left at home when I go away. :(

Someone said to me recently that you only measure what you manage. http://www.happiness-project.com/happiness_project/2009/03/measure-what-you-want-to-manage.html so you're on the right track!
