Help (again)?

Soooo. I imported my LJ into DW. Yay!

...now I'm stuck.

I would like to read my LJ friends list on my DW reading page. Is that possible, and if so, how?

HOLY COW. I'm struggling to comprehend the turn of events, but am also incredibly happy that we now have a female PM. But how did....ah what, ashjdfmvf'ada. OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. We go to bed, and wake up with Federal politics doing headstands. Let's hope she lasts beyond the next election.

Ugh ugh, mornings.

In continuation of the theme of my last post, I am happy to report that I managed to squish in some music practice last night, before I toddled off to my lesson, and some more this morning. This morning, you guys. I actually dragged my arse out of bed for it, and everything. I am so impressed with myself. :P Apparently it made me more organised, too; I was early for work, despite the extra half-hour taken for the musics.

Looking forward to [livejournal.com profile] monucs rehearsal tonight! (Hence the reason why I chose this morning rather than this evening for aforementioned activity.)

Wearing one of my new tops today. I look like a very well-dressed, clean, land-lubbing pirate. That is to say, I suppose, that I look nothing like a pirate, but I am wearing a red and white striped top with a ginormous creamy bow.

Passing it on, because I feel it to be necessary.

Found via [livejournal.com profile] iamsupernova.

Anybody who loves Amanda Fucking Palmer, like me and a thousand other people I can think of, should read this post, by [livejournal.com profile] ishyface, on the matter of Evelyn Evelyn, and why the project is NOT OK.

It makes me sad that somebody I idolise on the basis of her previous actions, which have led me to conclude that she stands up for her beliefs, challenges the stupid/ignorant/sexist/mainstream bullshit around her, and fights for the minority, would turn around and be a douchebag at the drop of a hat. She won't even acknowledge her critics*.

Guh. I don't even know where to start with this. The fact that she's portraying the whole thing as real, when it so obviously *isn't*, makes me squirm because it's so blatantly, sickeningly sensationalist. I thought she was above that, tbph.

I guess, the unintentional bright side of this whole saga is that it's made me sharply aware of the whole concept of ableist privilege. I did some reading over at disabledfeminists.com, which cued me in to a whole host of things about which I'd previously been unaware. Judging, however, by the fawning comments on Amanda's blog, not everybody has cottoned on.

This current disaster doesn't take away from her previous demonstrations of awesomeness, like the re-belly-on, but it sure has taken the shine off. Fail, Amanda. Fail.

Dear 2010,
quit it already.
No love,
me.

[*ETA: Jason Webley has responded, and amongst other things says that Amanda will respond when she is able to. At least they have now acknowledged that people are upset, and that they didn't set out to offend anybody.]

I've signed up to Animals Asia Foundation's Moon Bear sponsorship programme. I opted to sponsor a 'special needs' bear, and as of today am spending the princely sum of double my (modest) monthly phone bill to help provide food, shelter, and veterinary care to bears rescued from the bile trade.

I've been meaning to sign up for some time. It's nice having spare income to be able to contribute to something beyond my own existence. Humanitarian causes are important, and I do not doubt for a moment their merit. But me? I want my money to go to a cause that is not centred on humans. The sheer volume of the population is destroying the natural environment, and pushing out other animals. There's only so much room - and food and other resources - to go around, and the plight of animals so often goes ignored in the face of the plight of people. I can't donate to every charity even if I want to, a constraint which makes me seriously consider which charities I *do* want to support, and why. This is my first step, I suppose.

Andy Hurley makes things all better. He should consider a career as a nurse. Or a shrink. Not!news remains more clearly delineated not!news; Fall Out Boy are on indefinite hiatus, and Pete is a drama queen wordsmith with more red wine than is strictly good for him, and far more access to the internet than is good for us. What's new?

Guh, drama.

Spent my evening carefully avoiding the piles of Real Work I'm meant to be tackling. Kind of want to crawl away and hide for a while.

Finished 'Wyrd Sisters', and have a much higher appreciation for Pratchett than I did before (my starting point was a sample size of 1; 'Colour Of Magic' was sort of uninspiring).

Yah. Pottered away in bandom; folded some laundry.

Also, hot gossip suggests that GeeWay is to lend his voice to an epic 80s power ballad song on AFP's side project, Evelyn Evelyn. *bounce*

[ETA: Apart from the all-star cast already mentioned (“Weird Al” Yankovic, Gerard Way, Andrew WK, Neil Gaiman, Tegan and Sara, and Frances Bean Cobain), apparently MSI is involved, too. What? Coherence means nothing. My brain just exploded.]

I feel a giddy rush of delight, every time I think about the coming few months, which is pretty much all the time. I just feel like dancing. So excited, no lie.

Mornings are disagreeable beasts, rather like cockroaches

So when a cockroach invaded my already disagreeable morning, I was underwhelmed. Ugh!

I caught it in the kitchen and put it outside, not because I have any sense of justice or right-to-life sensibilities towards cockroaches, but because I was too squeamish to kill it. They are so disgusting, eep! *shudders* That said, I am glad not to live in Sydney.

I was horrendously late to work today, even by my standards. Unlike yesterday, I didn't even have a reasonable excuse. I just...struggled to get my arse out the door.

YESTERDAY. I received my new dress in the mail! \o/ It's so pretty. I bought it at Review in Canberra, only they didn't have my size in black, so they called another store to mail it to me.

Last night, mum, dad, our three German folk and I went out to a waterside restaurant, which was so definitely waterside as to be situated on a pier. Needless to say, there was a lot of fish on the menu. Many fancy things were available, so what did I order? Fish and chips. Sophistication, I haz it, yo. Altogether, it was a lovely night out; mum got drunk on two glasses of wine, which kept me amused.

I've nearly finished 'Emma'; I spent much of the book annoyed at the main characters, but it improved as it went along, which, I suppose, was the whole point of the book. Still, urgh. Irritating protagonist, dnw. Nonetheless, Mr Knightley makes me go ♥_♥; I wish I could write into existence a character like him for myself, minus the creepy "I've loved you since you were 13" sentiment, which would not have been creepy if they had been 13 together, but indeed he is a good 15 years older than she. Things have changed since Austen's time.

MERCH. \o/
I'm getting three tees, courtesy of this post. I've taken the black Cobra Starship one, the MCR "three cheers" era one, and the Hush Sound "dance me across the country" one. Even taking into account currency conversion from USD, and postage, it is still far cheaper to buy merch this way. Once again, no love for my country's location at the bottom of the civilised world. *spork*

THE COOL CHANGE ARRIVED!

\o/*\o/*\o/

*happy dance*

It's now a civilised temperature outside. Last night was shocking: it didn't drop below 33 degrees all night. Warmest night on record. WTF? I think it's sitting somewhere around 22 now.

Hopefully the drop in temperature will mean that the trains will be working on my way home tonight. *hopes*

Our family friends from Germany are arriving here on Friday, assuming of course that it is not so cold in Europe that their flight is delayed and/or cancelled.

My cold is getting better.

I've seen a couple of distressing things today. The first was an article linked to me by [livejournal.com profile] ix_tab, regarding transphobia. The second was an image of a bear forced to balance atop a moving horse's back, chained by its nose to a wooden platform on the horse's saddle. Why do people suck so badly? Not you, dear f-list. Not you. I just ...despair of humanity, sometimes.

Methinks I should actually get off my arse and support Animals Asia* with more than just words. It may not be much, but it's something I can do, now that I have a steady income.

*Animals Asia is a charity with the primary aim of rescuing bears from bile factories.

So pretty much everybody who's spent more than 2 seconds enquiring about my plans for 2010 has been gleefully earbashed regarding the impending arrival of [livejournal.com profile] frankkincense. So, pretty much everybody should have worked out by now that she's pretty damn awesome.

First meme of 2010!

This will actually be pretty boring, because most of my f-list lives within a 30km radius of me, and therefore shares my vernacular.

Nevertheless, a dialect meme! I added a couple of questions of my own, and had a great idea for another one, but I forgot what it was.

fill out your own answers first, in this conveniently blank questionnaire. )

Beach trip of tents and BBQs

I'm home, and only slightly sunburned, after 8 days at the beach.

I missed my puppy, and I'm glad to be home. That said, the trip itself was largely great, and very relaxing. There was sleeping (yay!), strawberry picking, a trip to a goat dairy (and there were some very friendly baby goats! SO ADORABLE!), winery touring, several trips to the hot springs, camp cooking, mad dashes to the coffee shop across the two-lane but incredibly busy road, and inevitably, swimmin' in the salty water at the beach (and, also inevitably, sand in uncomfortable places). I shared a tent with [livejournal.com profile] evil_s and [livejournal.com profile] beachy_woods for the first two nights, then switched to share with [livejournal.com profile] therathasspoken and [livejournal.com profile] dzurlady, and eventually also [livejournal.com profile] gabyvarius, when the former two arrived at camp. There are photos, which I shall put up eventually.

On NYE there was a storm, which was exciting in a mildly-too-exciting-for-kitties sort of way, but nothing flooded and nobody was fried by errant lightning, so all was well in the end. The weather gave us a long enough break to usher in the new year on the beach, singing madly with chorister folks and watching [livejournal.com profile] ockyflam do his best attempt at fire twirling in difficult conditions. Illegal fireworks were in abundance, with some a little too close to home for comfort.

Today, Stretch launched the boat he spent all week making, and it floated, despite bets to the contrary between [livejournal.com profile] evil_s and myself. Much amusement!

OH. Also, I saw Sherlock Holmes, and it was epic!

Um. That is all.

Hi!

Laaaaaaaaaazy last day.

It may be snowing and deathly cold in Europe (hi, [livejournal.com profile] foxe and [livejournal.com profile] frankkincense!), but no such luck here. It's bloody hot, and it's only going to get worse, or so I'm led to believe. On the up side (and it's a considerable up side), I won't freeze my arse off at Beach Trip this year. \o/

We went out for Southern Indian style lunch today, which was lovely, and now there is cake, though it is sadly not very nice.

Hmm. I ought to toddle off post-office-wards, and get my two-month letter in the mail and a step closer to its recipient. Postal strikes mean that it is unlikely to reach its destination for another couple of weeks, but that just adds to its ridiculous, languid charm. Or: that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :D

Summer, and other nuisances

My neck is burned. Stupid summer sun. Go away, dnw.

Spent a lot of money with [livejournal.com profile] therathasspoken on Saturday. For the record, we found the store we were looking for! After much trying on and admiring of clothing, and the ensuing indecision, we finally worked out what we were going to buy, bought it, and moseyed to Essendon for Bec's street party.

Yesterday I went to the Belgian Beer Garden for drinks with old acquaintances from uni. Jem was there, so I had somebody to cling to. I decided to walk home via Albert Park Lake, and stopped along the way at my favourite cafe for refuelling. :D

I am so sage, I practically garnish myself.

Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit. --Alcuin, AD 798.

And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God, since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.

Found here.

Does anybody else ever struggle to simplify their turns of phrase?
Case in point
Setting: car belonging to close friend of similar verbiage to me.
Circumstance: very early morning start with insufficient sleep, followed by somewhat boring wedding ceremony.
Result: sleepy, brain foggy [livejournal.com profile] why_am_i
Sentence uttered: "The warmth [of the car] has quelled my enthusiasm for consciousness."
Justification: In my sleep-addled state, I couldn't actually think of a simpler way of expressing the concept I was trying to communicate.

This afternoon is interminable. At least dictionary.com, wikipedia and [livejournal.com profile] ockyflam are making a concerted effort to keep me entertained. Verbigeration, verbolatry and grammatolatry are my new favourite words.

Tired, sore and mildly dehydrated kitty is tired, sore and mildly headachey.

On the bright side, academically-proactive kitty went and talked to a potential supervisor today. In true professorial form, the academic in question was lost without her PA, and mentally rescheduled our meeting from the agreed-upon time of 3pm to 3:30, which meant that I did a lot of waiting around and some mild cursing, and consequently have an extra half-hour of work to catch up on in my own time. Never mind, it was worth the wait - the projects on offer sound wonderful, and are fully funded. The team is multidisciplinary, the lab is small, and the professor is lovely, and seems focussed on ensuring the academic success of any pupils she takes under her wing.

Looking forward to the weekend, hells yeah. Surprisingingly, I'm still looking forward to Sunday. *checks own temperature and frowns slightly*
